With the school holidays just around the corner, many parents are wondering: how do I keep my kids active, off screens, and entertained for two full weeks? The good news is that you don’t need fancy equipment or a gym membership, just a bit of space, some energy, and a few fun ideas!

At Fit For Kids Co, we know how important it is for children to keep moving, not only for their physical health but also for their mood, sleep, and overall well-being.

So, we’ve put together 10 simple, movement-based activities that you can try at home (or in a park) to keep the kids moving and smiling during the holidays.

1. Animal Races

Channel your inner kangaroo, crab, bear, or frog!
Set up a start and finish line and challenge your kids to race using different animal movements. It’s hilarious and a great full-body workout.

2. Obstacle Course

Use household items like cushions, chairs, skipping ropes and boxes to create a fun indoor or backyard obstacle course.
Add challenges like crawling under tables or hopping on one foot.

3. Freeze Dance Party

Play your child’s favourite music and have a dance-off. When the music stops, everyone must freeze.
This game builds coordination and always brings out giggles.

4. Daily 10-Minute Challenge

Create a daily circuit challenge with five exercises:

  • Star jumps
    High knees
    Skipping
    Sit-ups
    Bear crawl

  • Set a timer and make it a family ritual each morning or afternoon!

5. Run Club at Home

Recreate one of our most popular programs!
Use chalk to make running tracks, set up mini relays, or time sprints from the front door to the fence. You can even make a little medal for “effort of the day.”

6. Scavenger Hunt with Movement

Create a list of things to find around the house or backyard, but to get each one, your child must complete a movement task first: 10 frog jumps, 20 seconds of jogging, etc.

7. Balloon Badminton

Blow up a balloon and give each child a wooden spoon or paper plate as a “racquet.”
The goal? Keep the balloon off the ground! Great for reflexes and hand-eye coordination.

8. Follow the Leader Fitness

Take turns being the leader and choosing a movement: run in circles, jump in place, hop like a bunny, anything goes!
Perfect for mixed age groups and super low prep.

9. Timed “Mission Runs”

Set a challenge like: “Run to the back fence, collect a sock, run back and do 5 jumping jacks — GO!”
Kids love beating their own time and you can add to the mission list daily.

10. Mindful Cool-Down Walks

Finish busy days with a quiet walk around the block or backyard. Add mindfulness prompts like:
“Tell me 3 things you can hear…” or “Let’s walk in slow motion for 30 seconds.”

Final Tip:

Kids thrive on routine. Even during school holidays, setting aside 30–60 minutes a day for movement can make a huge difference in behaviour, energy, and mood, for them and for you!

Enjoy the break  and remember, movement is medicine (and fun)!
