We all know that sport is a fantastic tool for teaching young children many of life's great lessons. Sportsmanship, etiquette, following rules and responsibility are all aspects of sport that we promote and nurture in students. This week however was a reminder that sometimes in sport, revered sports people are sometimes not the best at teaching these lessons.

The behavior of one particular Australian tennis player showed us all of the bad things that can be conjured up in sport. Unsportsmanlike conduct, arguing, tantrums & general bad behavior were all on show at Wimbledon and set a very bad example for the young and impressionable junior players & kids of this country.

So whilst showing personally on the court, field or arena is encouraged we think that these athletes need to take the responsibility of 'role model' with a greater degree of seriousness. Do we really want the next generation to think this behavior is the norm?

We think that sports stars, coaches and parents need to teach children the good aspects of sportsmanship and help to educate children that the best character to come out in competition should be those aspects that we can all be proud of.
