This Girl Can - One Year On

One year on from the launch of VicHealth's successful 'This Girl Can' campaign, its clear to see the impact on girls and women around the country. The campaign is no longer simply a campaign but instead a fully fledged movement! Girls are getting involved and are getting active, but there are still some challenges to overcome. The three biggest challenges girls still face are:

1. Appearance
- Fear of not looking the part or dressing the part

2. Ability
- Fear of judgment around their skills

3. Priorities
- Feeling guilty or selfish for doing something for themselves

But with the help of the program and a changing conversation, we believe we can change this and ensure women / girls stay fit, active and engaged in sport for life.

Why the Sporting Schools Program is fantastic for Aussie Kids

As part of SportAus's push to get more kids healthy, fit and active a wonderful program called Sporting Schools has been running across the country. The Sporting Schools program gives primary school aged children the chance to experience a variety of different sports each school term through their local primary school absolutely FREE!

We are official providers of both the ANZ Tennis Hotshots program and the Golf Australia MyGolf Program. We love being part of an initiative that helps to get more Australian's into sport.

Below is a great example of how the program is helping hockey with the Hook Into Hockey program being run through the Sporting Schools network.

Netball Warm Up Drills for kids

Netball is a fantastic sport for both boys and girls and one that you can start playing from a very young age. In the below video Netball star Liz Watson shows us how we can warm up 'right' before a game or training session.

Simple Stretching - crucial to ensure you avoid injury or a tear when you start your session.

Light Jogging - A great way to get the heart rate up and the body ready to go!

Passing Warm Up - Get the eye in with some throwing and catching!

Now you are all set to go! A good warm up will ensure a great session or game, so make sure next time you hit the court, warm up, warm up, warm up!

5 easy ways to help children rise earlier in the morning

We all know how difficult it can be to get kids up early in the morning for sport, school or any other family activity you may have on. We thought we would look at 5 easy ways to help our kids get up, get active and get a head start on the day ahead.

  1.  1. Minimise screen time before bed

The most obvious thing we can do to help children rise earlier and fresher is to limit the brain stimulation of screens before bed. This is easier said than done and is even a challenge for the adults these days! But my making a rule that screens are off by a certain time, you will be ensuring your child is getting a quality nights sleep and hopefully an early morning bounce out of bed.

2. Drink Water

Drinking water before bed helps to keep children hydrated and therefore fresh and ready to tackle the day in the morning. Obviously you dont want to have too much water before bed for obvious reasons so try and get them to drink water consistently throughout the day.

3. Downtime activity to help relax before bed

A book, puzzle or anything to help a child relax before bed is a great way to ensure when the head hits the pillow it’s game over. Try and find something your child will look forward to before bed as this will also make the entire process that little bit easier!

4. A good breakfast to look forward to

If theres a good breakfast waiting theres a good chance your child is going to be getting up quick smart. Before bed remind them of what awaits in the morning and perhaps be surprised by how nimble and awake they can be when there are fresh pancakes in on their plate.

5. Give them an incentive

Whether its some time on the iPad or something else they really enjoy, making this something they can do ‘if’ they get up earlier enough will certainly enhance their motivation to not hit the snooze.

What is your best tactic?
