Why Teamwork Might Be the Most Underrated Skill Your Child Learns at School

In the classroom, we celebrate academic achievement, on the playground we praise kindness, but there's a hidden gem in your child’s weekly routine that deserves just as much attention: teamwork.

Whether your child is passing a ball, running in a relay, or simply learning how to take turns, these moments on the court or field are shaping their confidence and character more than we often realise.

The Power of the Group Play

Through structured movement programs (like the ones we run at Fit For Kids Co), we see the magic of teamwork unfold in every session. Shy kids open up, confident kids learn to lead with empathy and everyone learns that wins and losses are best shared with others.

It’s not about becoming the next Serena or Sam Kerr. It’s about learning how to:

  • - Communicate clearly (even without words)

  • - Support others after a fall or fumble

  • - Accept feedback, try again, and improve together

These soft skills often translate into better focus at school, improved emotional regulation, and a healthier sense of self.

Did you know? Children who participate in team based physical activity are more likely to show higher levels of self-esteem and school engagement, according to recent Australian studies.

How We Build It at Fit For Kids Co

Every week, our Melbourne-based coaching team delivers fun, inclusive sport programs to primary schools, ELCs, and community groups. But behind every dribble, dodge, or goal, we’re building teamwork intentionally through:

  • Cooperative games (like passing relays or partner circuits)

  • Small-sided challenges that encourage positive interaction

  • Rotating roles so every child gets to lead, follow, and contribute

Community Matters

As a local business, we’re proud to be part of Melbourne’s growing movement to support the physical and emotional development of young people through sport. We work with schools, parents, and workplaces who want to see kids not just active but connected.

At Fit For Kids Co, we believe that sport and exercise aren’t just fun, they’re fundamental to helping kids grow up healthy, confident, and connected.

Whether it’s structured sport or free play, movement is a powerful tool for supporting a child’s development.

How Much Exercise Do Kids actually Need?

According to the Australian Government’s Physical Activity Guidelines, children aged 5–12 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily.

This can include:

  • - Running and jumping

  • - Structured sports (like basketball, tennis, or soccer)

  • - Dance or martial arts

  • - Active play like tag, climbing or cycling

However, busy families often struggle to meet this target, especially during the school term or holidays when routines are disrupted.

That's where we can help :)

Why a Kids Run Club is the Perfect Way to Start the Day for Primary School Students

For parents and educators alike, finding ways to help children start their day in a positive, focused, and healthy way is always a top priority. That’s where the Kids Run Club comes in. We host fun, inclusive run clubs that get primary-aged kids moving before the school bell rings.

Whether your child is already sports obsessed or simply needs a confidence boost, our before-school run club offers physical, mental, and social benefits that will see them success inside and outside the class room :)

The Benefits of a Morning Run Club for Kids

1. Boosts Focus and Learning

Movement increases blood flow to the brain, helping kids improve concentration, mood, and alertness in the classroom. Starting the day with a short run sets them up to better absorb learning throughout the school day.

2. Builds Confidence and Resilience

Run club isn’t about being the fastest, it’s about showing up, moving your body, and celebrating effort. Kids build resilience and self-esteem by setting small goals and watching their own improvement week to week.

3. Encourages Healthy Habits

Regular morning activity promotes a lifelong habit of prioritising health and wellbeing. Kids learn that exercise isn’t a chore but instead it’s fun, social, and something to look forward to.

4. Promotes Positive Social Connections

Before-school activities help kids make friends across grades and build social skills in a low-pressure environment. Run clubs are a great way to foster a sense of belonging and school spirit.

5. Burns Off Excess Energy

Got a high-energy child? A run club is the perfect outlet to get that energy out early, helping them regulate emotions and behaviour throughout the school day.

Building Self-Esteem Through Sport: Why It Matters for Kids

When children play sport, they're doing far more than just moving their bodies. What we love to see is tht they're building self-belief, resilience, and confidence that can last a lifetime (hence our tagline: Sport For Life).

At Fit For Kids Co, we see firsthand the powerful impact that regular sport and physical activity can have on a child’s self-esteem and we believe it’s one of the most valuable outcomes of getting kids active.

Here are just some of the benifits of getting kids into sport from a young age.

Confidence Through Achievement

Every time a child learns a new skill, makes a great pass, or improves in a game, they get a natural confidence boost. These small wins compound over time, reinforcing a belief that they can learn, grow, and succeed through effort.

Safe Spaces to Take Risks

Sport provides a healthy, low-stakes environment for kids to step out of their comfort zones. Whether it’s trying out for a team or playing in front of others, these moments help children develop courage and emotional strength in a way that’s fun and supportive.

Belonging and Connection

Being part of a team fosters a sense of belonging. It teaches empathy, communication, and the joy of working toward a common goal, essential ingredients for both self-esteem and social development.

Kids who feel seen and valued by coaches and teammates are more likely to thrive in other areas of life too.

Learning to Handle Setbacks

Losing a game, missing a goal, or facing a challenge on the field gives kids a safe space to learn about resilience. With the support of trusted adults, these experiences can help kids bounce back stronger and view mistakes as opportunities, not failures.

The Mental Health Bonus

Numerous studies show a clear link between regular physical activity and better mental health outcomes for kids. Sport helps reduce anxiety, improves mood, and provides an outlet for stress, all of which directly feed into a healthier self-image.

The Fit For Kids Co Approach

At Fit For Kids Co, we design every program with a focus on fun, inclusion, and growth. Whether it’s through our school incursions, after-school clubs, or holiday programs, we aim to do more than just keep kids active, we want to build future leaders with healthy minds, strong bodies, and confident kids!
